Born in Denmark in 1968, Helena Christensen started modelling at the age of nine. She has now spent about two thirds of her life in front of the camera. At the age of 18, she left her home in Copenhagen to pursue a modelling career in Paris and was signed immediately to the Marilyn Agency, which still represents her in France. Christensen’s striking beauty and photogenic ease were first brought to wider public attention in 1989 with a shoot for French Elle by photographer Friedemann Hauss.

A cover for British Vogue, shot by Peter Lindbergh, quickly followed and a new supermodel was born. One of the hardest-working models in the Nineties, Christensen regularly featured in ads for Armani, Versace and Karl Lagerfeld, while contracts with Cover Girl cosmetics, Patrick Cox and high street store Dorothy Perkins kept her profile high.

Off-camera, Christensen has largely maintained a healthy detachment from the skin-deep world of fashion, although she counts fellow supermodels Claudia Schiffer, Carla Bruni and Eva Herzigova among her closest friends. An affair with late rock god Michael Hutchence of INXS briefly boosted tabloid interest in Christensen in the early Nineties, but she generally eschews the publicity on which many models thrive, claiming: "Real life starts when I stop being a model."
